PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an up/down gray code counter whose circuit scale can be made small. SOLUTION: This up/down gray code counter is provided with an up count gray code counter 3 for performing only up counting and a most significant bit data selecting means 4 for inputting the most significant bit of data outputted from the up count gray code counter 3 and selecting whether to output the most significant bit of the data as it is or to output the most significant bit after inverting the most significant bit on the basis of a count direction control signal MIR.
