PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to lower a car to repair equipment of a top part of an elevator shaft in the case when the car stops at the top floor. SOLUTION: The car lowering method at the time when the elevator fails and stops at the top floor to lower the car in the case when the elevator fails in a state where the car stops at the top floor is to lower the car to a riding position for a worker to ride on a ceiling by removing a part of a unit weight of a balance weight and releasing a brake. It is devised to lower the car by mounting the removed unit weight on a compensating chain in the case when the compensating chain is connected between the car and the balance weight.
