The system enables allows the door (2) to swing open on a hinge (10,12) with vertical and horizontal axes (S1,S2). It moves the door vertically to operate the locking system by engaging and disengaging door-rim locking pegs (6) with keepers (4) on the door frame (14). The hinge is fixed to the door and attached to the door frame by a pivot link (24) and by an electric motor (26) powered screw or rack-and-pinion mechanism (18,28), which provides the vertical motion. The drive self-locks when the door is open. A manual mechanism for operating the drive is provided for emergency use.
