PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce data while eliminating the omission of the data when the reproduction of the data recorded on a magnetic tape is started. SOLUTION: When the reproducing operation is started at the time t201, the reproduction is started in such a condition as making the magnetic tape run by the reproducing speed below 1/2 fold of the feeding speed of the magnetic tape on the normal reproducing time, and also the observation of the deviation width is started. The timing of the next on-track is predicted from the periodicity of the measured deviation width, and the feeding speed is changed over to that of the magnetic tape on the normal reproducing time at the predicted time t203 as the predicting time of the on-track.
