The invention relates to a method for producing an alkali metal catalyst by mixing an alkali metal with pulverulent, solid potassium carbonate as the support material. The invention is characterised in that the potassium carbonate has a specific surface area of at least 0.3m<2>/g. The invention also relates to the use of said catalyst for the side-chain alkylation of alkyl benzoles.
