Two panels are fixed positively in position, and connected by Laser welding. At least one of the panels is elastically or plastically deformed by the fixing, so that a sectional gap is developed. The panels are pressed against each other with a set fixing force. The appliance to carry out the process has support surfaces (4,5) with shapes different to those of the panels (2,3) to be fixed. One support surface has projections, and one is formed as an abutment.
