Alkenyl compounds of formula (I) are claimed as new. Compounds of formula (I) are claimed characterized in that: (1) in at least one R<1> or R<2> group at least one CH2 group is replaced by CHCH or at least one Z<1> or Z<2> is CHCH; and (2) the compound contains at least one 1,4-phenylene double substituted by F, Cl, CN, CF3 or OCF3 or at least two 1,4-phenylene groups monosubstituted by F, Cl, CN, CF3 or OCF3. R<1>,R<2> = 1-12C alkyl, optionally substituted by halogen, CN or CF3 and non-neighboring CH2 groups are optionally substituted by O, S, CO, COO, OCOO, CHCH, CHCF, CFCF, CC or 1,3-cyclobutylene; A<1> = trans-1,4-cyclohexylene optionally substituted in the 1 and/or 4-positions by F, Cl, CN or CF3 and having non-neighboring CH2 groups substituted by O and/or S; A<2>,A<3> = 1,4-phenylene, optionally substituted in the 2 and/or 3-position by F, Cl, CN, CF3 or OCF3 and 1 or 2 CH groups are optionally replaced by N, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene optionally substituted in the 1 and/or 4-position by F, Cl, CN or CF3 and non-neighboring CH2 groups are replaced by O and/or S or 1,4-cyclohexenylene; Z<1>,Z<2> = CH2O, CF2O, COO, OCO, CF2CF2, CHCH, CHCF, CFCF, CC or a single bond; n = 0 or 1 Independent claims are included for: (1) a liquid crystalline medium (II) containing at least two liquid crystal components whereby it contains at least one compound of formula (I); (2) a liquid crystal display element containing the medium (II); and (3) an electro-optical display element containing a liquid crystal medium (II) as the dielectric.
