Lighting apparatus having a light source, a diffusive/reflective layer locat ed in front of the light source arranged to diffusely reflect and transmit ligh t from the light source, and a differential transmitter located on the opposit e side of the diffusive/reflective layer to the light source for controlling t he transmission of the light passed through the diffusive/reflective layer. The differential transmitter is preferably in the form of a reflective pattern deposited on a substrate, for example on the rear surface of the diffusive/reflective layer.
