Preparation of an insulating panel or matting from wood fibres comprises mixing of the dry wood fibers with heat activated plastics fibers or adhesive particles, application of the mixture to an endless travelling screen, and compression of the fiber mixture to a thickness of at least 20 mm, and crosslinking of the wood fibers to a matrix penetrating the fibers is new. Preparation of an insulating panel (IP) or matting () from wood fibres comprises: preparation from wood fibers; direct addition to the loose wood fibers of fire retarding agents or direct addition to a mixer containing adhesive particles,resins, waxes, biologically degradable plastics binders and natural or supporting fibers, either natural or made from conventional or biologically degradable plastics into a drying process; mixing of the fire retarding wood fibers with heat activated plastics fibers or adhesive particles, etc as above in the drying process; sprinkling of the fiber mixture at a specific point on an endless travelling screen; compression or calibration of the loosely sprinkled fiber mixture between the travelling screen and two opposite endless travelling screens to a thickness of at least 20 mm; crosslinking of the heat activated plastics or adhesive particles to a matrix penetrating the wood fibers in a connected hot air drying tunnel or streaming drier; and, if required, formation of the plate or matting to the required size. An Independent claim is also included for an IP or matting obtained from a mixture of wood fibers of length 1.5-20 mm and thickness 0.05-1 mm and heat activated plastics fibers or adhesive particles.
