High pressure discharge lamp and method of manufacture

The high pressure discharge lamp is designed so that the thickened electrode section (9,10) is so dimensioned depending on the operating parameters of the lamp, that this in normal lamp operation does not fuse, and that this nevertheless during the first operating hours of the lamp, has an electrode tip (19) at the electrode section (9,10), which is designed so long, that this fuses in the region of the attachment of a light arc. The electrode section (9,10) is approximately spherical in shape and has a diameter which is about 1.5 to 5 times larger than the diameter of the electrode rod (20).
