PURPOSE: Provided is a method for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a mammal by administering a highly selective endothelin Subtype A receptor (ETA) antagonist. CONSTITUTION: The method for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a patient in need of treatment characteristically comprises administering an effective amount of a selective inhibitor of the ETA receptor, such as the compound 4-(7-ethyl-1,3-benxodioxol-5-yl)-2-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxylic acid 1,1-dioxide or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
