PURPOSE: A number translation method in a switching system is provided to simplify the whole number translation procedure by managing prefixes in a single prefix table according to number types, without managing them according to kinds of codes. CONSTITUTION: If a number translation request is received from a subscriber block and a transit call processing block(S11), a relevant number translation block analyzes the TON(Type OF Number) of terminating digit information(S12). In case that the TON is an international number, the number translation block deciphers a prefix start pointer corresponding to the international number(S13) and executes prefix translation for the international number in a prefix table using the prefix start pointer(S14). Meanwhile, if the TON is a national number, the number translation block deciphers a prefix start pointer corresponding to the national number(S15). Then the number translation block searches the prefix table for a prefix for the national number and executes prefix translation for the national number, without executing the prefix translation procedure for an international number(S16).
