PURPOSE: A method for extracting viral nucleic acids from serum or blood plasma and a composition for extracting the nucleic acids used therefor are provided, thereby detecting viral nucleic acids associated with diseases rapidly and simply. CONSTITUTION: The composition for extracting viral nucleic acids comprises 0.5 to 5.0% by volume of 1M dithiothreithol(DTT), 0.5 to 5.0% by volume of 10% ethylphenolpolyethyleneglycoether and distilled water. The composition is used for extracting viral nucleic acid from human or animal serum or blood plasma wherein the virus is selected from hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis D virus, hepatitis E virus, hepatitis G virus, AIDS virus, and influenza virus, and the nucleic acid is DNA or RNA. The method for extracting viral nucleic acids from serum or blood plasma comprises the steps of: mixing serum or blood plasma with the composition; heating the mixture at 80 to 120 deg. C for 2 to 10 minutes and cooling it; and centrifuging the mixture at 10,000 to 15,000rpm for 2 to 10 minutes.
