PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for translating a number in a switch is provided to shorten the procedure of a number translation by instantly retrieving path information in case of judging a PNNI(Private Network to Network Interface) call by a number translation block. CONSTITUTION: In case that a caller subscribed in a switch(node) located in a specific region calls a callee subscribed in a switch(node) located in an other region, an origination call is inputted to a local station switch(node)(S120). A subscriber control block of the switch(node) requests the number translation of the origination call to a number translation block(S130). The number translation block retrieves index information and judges whether the origination call is a local station call or a PNNI call by a remote station call(S140). If the origination call is the PNNI call, the number translation block transmits corresponding index information by the origination call to a PNNI routing control block(S150). The PNNI routing control block receives index information, retrieves a path table stored in an itself database, and retrieves detailed path information by corresponding index(S160). The PNNI routing control block transmits retrieved path information or DTL(Designated Transit List) information to the subscriber control block(S170). The subscriber control block receives the DTL signal controls a PNNI relay control block using the DTL signal for setting a path to connect to the switch(node) subscribed by the callee(S180).
