A method of storing a speech signal, e.g. in a mobile telephone, comprises receiving a speech signal which comprises a voice portion having a voice signal and a background portion having a signal level and a time period, storing voice data corresponding to the voice signal of the voice portion, determining and storing background noise data indicative of the signal level of the background portion, and storing time data indicative of the time period of the background portion. The data is stored in a memory 16, the data being routed via a switch 14 controlled by a voice activity detector 12. Background noise data is supplied by a comfort noise unit 10. The memory can store both transmitted and received speech data.
