Automated syringes of analytical devices e.g. syringes which are used to inject sample solutions or solvents into gas chromatographs, are washed/rinsed by placing the syringe needle into a wash solution then withdrawing the syringe plunger to draw a plug of the solution into the syringe barrel followed by removing the needle from the solution and drawing air into the barrel by further withdrawal of the plunger then depressing the plunger to expel the plug of wash solution from the syringe. The procedure is then repeated. The wash solution may be cleaning solvent or sample solution.
