Process for the preparation of isolongifolanol

Production of isolongifolanol (I) comprises epoxidizing isolongifolene (II) to form isolongifolene oxide (III), rearranging (III) in the presence of a base to form isolongifolenol (IV), and reducing (IV). Production of isolongifolanol of formula (I) comprises epoxidizing isolongifolene of formula (II) to form isolongifolene oxide of formula (III), rearranging (III) in the presence of a base to form isolongifolenol of formula (IV), and reducing (IV). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) isolongifolenol of formula (IV); (2) use of (I) and (IV) as fragrances or flavors; and (3) fragrance compositions containing (IV).
