PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid or its ester in high optical purity on an industrial scale in high efficiency by using an enzyme having excellent optical selectability and available at a low cost. SOLUTION: The optically active tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid or its ester can be produced by treating a racemic tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid ester with an ester-decomposition enzyme originated from nature.
