PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, etc., by which a precisely focused picture can be obtained even in a reading unit obtained by installing a rod lens array of which the depth of focus is short and a reading element such as a CCD at a fixed position so as to integrate them. SOLUTION: The image reading unit obtained by installing the lens and the reading element such as the CCD at the fixed position so as to integrate them is provided with a means capable of varying a distance between the reading unit 1 and an object, and a chart for detecting the condition of focusing is installed at the position of the object. Then, while detecting the condition of focusing, the unit 1 is moved by the distance varying means to detect the distance of best focusing.
