PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic tracking device that controls a universal head by taking a dead band into account only when a mobile speed of a mobile object to be automatically tracked is slow but without taking the dead band into account when the mobile speed of the mobile object is fast so as to automatically track the mobile object thereby automatically tracking the mobile object by means of an easy to see video image. SOLUTION: An image memory 50 of an image processing unit 14 sequentially captures images (1)-(3) by 3 frames photographed by a camera 40 at panning/tilt movement of the universal head 10. Then the processing by an image processing processor 52 and a CPU 54 extracts an image of the mobile object from the images (1) and (2) and the images (1) and (3). When the mobile speed of the mobile object is slow, whether or not an image of the mobile object indicates that the mobile object stays within a prescribed range of dead band is discriminated, and when the mobile object stays within the range of dead band, the universal head 10 is not moved, and when the mobile object does not stay within the range of dead band, the universal head 10 is moved in a direction of tracking the mobile object on the basis of the image of the mobile object. When the mobile speed of the mobile object is fast, the universal head 10 is moved in a direction of tracking the mobile object on the basis of the image of the mobile object without taking the dead band into account.
