PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic wave detector detecting far-infrared rays over a wide wavelength region, and having a high responsiveness of 1 ns or shorter, a detection sensitivity of photo counting level and a wide dynamic range, in which integration can be readily implemented. SOLUTION: The far-infrared detector comprises a solid state parahydrogen crystal (1) disposed in an optical cryostat (2), a laser system (3) irradiating the solid state parahydrogen crystal (1) with two laser lights (5) of frequenciesωa andωb near resonance to Raman transition while superposing coaxially, and a middle- or near-infrared detector (9) for detecting middle- or near-infrared rays (7). The solid-state parahydrogen crystal (1) irradiated with the laser light (5) is further irradiated with far-infrared rays (6) so as to be detected. The far-infrared rays (6) are converted into middle- or near-infrared rays (7), which are detected by the middle- or near-infrared detector (9).
