PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recorder whose operability can be improved. SOLUTION: A free area list 46a is prepared on the basis of a FAT(file allocation table) recorded on a magneto-optical disk 34, and the free area of a recording destination is also decided. Compressed image data prepared on the basis of the operation of a shutter button 48 is recorded in the decided free area, and when recording is successful, the FAT is updated. However, when the recording is not successful, a message is displayed on a monitor 28, a magneto-optical disk 36 is subjected to write protect in response to the operation of a set key 50. Then, when a recording error occurs due to a failure of the magneto-optical disk, a recording error does not occur each time recording is attempted and its operability can be improved because the write protect is applied to the magneto-optical disk.
