PURPOSE: To provide a high strength austenitic stainless steel strip which as Vickers hardness of >=400, and has an excellent shape flatness. CONSTITUTION: The high strength austenitic stainless steel strip has a composition containing, by mass, < =0.20% C, < =4.0% Si, < =5.0% Mn, 4.0 to 12.0% Ni, 12.0 to 20.0% Cr, < =5.0% Mo and < =0.15% N, and the balance substantially Fe, and in which Md (N) value defined by the formula (1) is 0 to >=125, and has a dual phase structure of austenite + martensite containing an inversely transformed austenitic phase of >=3 vol.%. The steel strip is produced by subjecting a steel strip to solution treatment, thereafter forming a strain induced martensitic phase by cold rolling, next heating the steel strip at 500 to 700°C, and performing inverse transformation treatment thereto.
