PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera that can prevent production of smear in a through-image displayed on a monitor with simple control. SOLUTION: A system controller 29 fixes a value of an aperture 14 to a value suitable for through-image indication before a first stage release switch 31 is closed while a through-image display function is set to ON. When the first stage release switch 31 is closed, the system controller 29 sets the value of the aperture 14 from a result of photometry during the display of the through- image and conducts again the photometry after the setting of the aperture to decide a shutter speed of an element shutter of a CCD 18. Furthermore, when a second stage release switch 32 is closed and the CCD 18 is exposed, the system controller 29 closes the shutter 15 for a time until at least an end time of read after the end of exposure to shut an incident light of the object onto the CCD 18.
