PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the efficiency and capacity by controlling the operation of a valve, thereby regulating the pressure in the high-pressure components of a steam compression system and controlling the enthalpy of the steam compression system. SOLUTION: A stream compression system is composed of a compressor, a heat radiation type of heat exchanger, an expander, and a heat absorptive heat exchanger. The high-pressure components of the steam compression system, in short, the pressure inside a gas cooler is regulated by controlling the operation of the valves arranged at one or plural discharge ports of the heat radiation type of heat exchanger, in short, a gas cooler circuit. The end of one circuit is blocked by fastening the valves, whereby a refrigerant is reserved to reduce the effective heat conductive area and also to increase the pressure of the gas cooler. The pressure of the gas cooler is lowered by opening the valve. The efficiency and/or capacity is optimized by controlling the operation of the valves, thereby regulating the high-pressure components of the steam compression system and controlling the enthalpy of the steam compression system.
