SOLUTION: This distance measuring instrument 1 measures the distance between a photoreceptor drum 103 and developing sleeve 106a of a copying machine 100, before the drum 103 is actually set. Rotating shafts 12 of the instrument 1 which are directed in the axial direction of a drum shaft C1 are provided at both ends of a cylindrical main body 2 of a measuring section, and a swing arm 4 which can swing in the circumferential direction relative to the rotating shaft 12 is provided on the drive side of the body 2. In addition, distance measuring sensors 15 and 15 are attached vertically to the drum shaft C1, by detecting the relative angle of traverse of the arm 4 by means of a positioning sensor 14 and controlling the angle of traverse through feed back, etc., and the axial distance, corresponding to the distance between the drum 103 and sleeve 106a, is measured by successively controlling rotation and measurement.
