Sample preparation system comprises a thermodesorption tube in the gas path between the analyte source and the gas sensors. The tube is provided with a programmable heater or heater combined with a cooler to adjust the temperature from -40 to +250 deg C. The direction of gas flow occurs in the same direction of the analyte source to the gas sensors. The tube is able to operate in an adsorption modulus or a desorption modulus. Adsorption occurs at a low constant temperature and desorption at a higher constant temperature. The analyte mixture is completely or partially separated into different fractions. A reference gas of known composition is used for the desorption.
