An optical compensating sheet which comprises a cellulose ester film and, formed thereon in this order, an alignment film and an optically anisotropic layer comprising liquid-crystalline molecules whose alignment has been fixed. The cellulose ester film is one in which the side coated with the alignment film has been saponified by coating with an alkali solution.
