The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for handling logs (5). They provide a quicker handling of logs (5) in the vicinity of crosscut saw (4) and, at the same time, reduce the generation of waste material. These improvements are achieved by the design and the movement of longitudinal conveyors (1, 2, 3), by optimising the movements of the crosscut saw (4) in accordance with the data obtained from a measurement conveyor, and by measuring the length of the blocks without a detent by means of photocell and a pulse detector.
