In defined spans of time a query signal is sent into a tank's interior and a response signal is received and evaluated for a display. Each response signal received is compared with response signals corresponding to specific levels and stored in a memory (5). If these match, a display signal corresponding to the level of this stored response signal appears for a display device (8). If they do not match, use of liquid is calculated and subtracted from the level last detected.
