Process for adjusting the oxygen concentration of a catalyst system in an exhaust gas pipe of an I.C. engine uses a catalyst system consisting of a pre-catalyst (5) and a main catalyst (6) arranged downstream. An oxygen sensor (7) is arranged upstream of the pre-catalyst and an oxygen sensor (8) is arranged between the pre-catalyst and the main catalyst. Preferred Features: The theoretical value for the oxygen amount received by the main catalyst is determined depending on the air mass stream, the temperature and further parameters of the main catalyst.
