The carding machine has at least one opening under the drum, between the doffer and the licker-in, to remove separated dust and debris. Short fibers (19a,19b) are drawn through the openings (18a,18b) by suction from the clothing of the rotating drum. The pull forces on the fibers are greater than the clinging action of the drum clothing. The carding machine has an adjustable air gap (21a,2b) in front of the openings in the cover (17), against the direction of drum rotation, for the air feeds (B,B') aligned at the drum clothing. The volume and/or the pressure of the air feeds can be adjusted. An air guide is at the air gap, at the end of the cover in the direction of drum rotation, with an adjustable gap between the air guide and the drum. The air flow strength can be adjusted, and the air is forced out into the ambient atmosphere by the drum rotation. The air gaps are also connected to air blowers. The assembly has a number of suction openings, each with an air gap. A pressure monitor is mounted to the cover, to measure the static pressure between the cover and the drum, and the readings are used to set the air guide blades. At least one pick-up roller is at the cover opening, rotating against the direction of drum rotation, to detach long fibers from the drum clothing, and each suction opening can have a number of pick-up rollers. The pick-up rollers have a sawtooth clothing, with the teeth aligned against the direction of roller rotation. The pick-up rollers have a diameter of 100-300 mm, rotating at a surface speed of 0.5-5.0 m/sec. The removed short fibers are passed to a waste suction system, and the detached long fibers are returned to the card feed.
