A method of producing an optical fiber which uses an IR-band wavelength as a using wavelength band, characterized by drawing an optical fiber (1) to be taken up around a bobbin (2), and then exposing it to a hydrogen-containing atmosphere having a concentration of at least 0.05 vol.% and up to 4.0 vol.% before used, wherein a hydrogen treating temperature set to less than 50 DEG C, preferably up to 30 DEG C, further preferably room temperature enables an efficient and safe production requiring an optimum hydrogen treating with a small loss increase by hydrogen even when used in a broad band.
