A process for rationally producing a substituted halogenobenzene compound, especially a 2,6-dialkyl (or aryl)-4-substituted halogenobenzene compound, which comprises reacting a substituted (thio)phenol or (thio)phenolate represented by the general formula (I) (I) in the presence of a halogenating agent represented by the general formula (II). (II) The benzene compounds are useful as intermediates for medicines or agricultural chemicals.
