<p>The present invention provides a voltammetric apparatus comprising a) an electroanalytical cell (12) comprising a mercury electrode (14) as a working electrode; a counter electrode (16); and a reference electrode (18); b) a purification container (28) connected to the cell, the purification container comprising at least an oxidizing acid or a mixture of at least one oxidizing agent and at least one acid; and c) a means (38) for feeding the resulting purified mercury from the purification container to the working electrode. The present invention further provides a process for purifying and recycling mercury in a mercury electrode, the process comprising the steps of continuously bringing contaminated mercury in contact with at least an oxidizing acid or a mixture of at least one oxidizing agent and at least one acid, resulting in purified mercury; and continuously delivering the purified mercury into the mercury electrode. In one embodiment, the working electrode is a dropping mercury electrode. In another embodiment, the working electrode is a static dropping mercury electrode.</p> |
