The invention relates to water-soluble or water-swellable copolymers which can be obtained by radical copolymerisation of A) acryloyldimethyltaurine acid and/or acryloyldimethyltaurates and B) optionally, one or more additional olefinically unsaturated, optionally cross-linking comonomers having at least one oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur or phosphorus atom and having a molecular weight of less than 500 g/mol, the copolymerisation C) being carried out in the presence of at least one polymeric additive with a number average molecular weight of 200 g/mol to 10<9> g/mol.
