In an elevator, preferably one without machine room, a hoisting machine engages a set of hoisting ropes via a traction sheave, said set of hoisting ropes comprising hoisting ropes of substantially circular cross-section. The ropes have a load-bearing part twisted from steel wires of circular and/or non- circular cross-section. The steel wires of the hoisting ropes have a cross- sectional area larger than about 0.015 mm2 and smaller than about 0.2 mm2 and a strength exceeding about 2000 N/mm2. The elevator preferably has a hoisting machine of substantially light weight relative to the nominal load.
