The regulating unit (10) has a control inlet to influence the regulating behavior of the unit and for locally balancing the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas cleaning element. The control inlet is connected to the second exhaust gas probe. Exhaust gas cleaning device comprises an engine control unit (16) for adjusting the mixture composition of the engine; a first exhaust gas probe (3) arranged in the exhaust gas stream; a first exhaust gas cleaning element (2) arranged downstream after the first probe; a regulating unit (10) connected to the first probe and the outlet side of the engine control unit for regulating the mixture composition of the engine depending on the exhaust gas composition measured by the first probe; and a second exhaust gas probe (5) arranged downstream after the first cleaning element. The regulating unit has a control inlet to influence the regulating behavior of the unit and for locally balancing the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas cleaning element. The control inlet is connected to the second exhaust gas probe. Preferred Features: The exhaust gas cleaning element is a catalyst. The regulating unit has two I-regulators arranged behind each other. The second exhaust gas probe is connected to one of the I-regulators. The exhaust gas robes are lambda sensors.
