The invention relates to a method and device for profiling workpieces, in particular for the generation of undercuts (1), or similar, on geartooth flanks (2) of internally or externally toothed working gears (3). The above is achieved by machine cutting of the rotated workpiece (3), using a cutting edge tool, which is also rotated in a worktool axis, parallel to the workpiece axis, with a fixed speed relationship to the working gear, but with variable phase position, the cutting edge of which is displaced along an envelope curve corresponding to the profile form as a result of a combination of a variation in axial separation (A) and phase position (P), overlaid on the rotation. According to the invention, an improved device with regard to increased performance can be achieved, whereby the cutting edges work with an increasing axial separation for external toothed working gears and decreasing axial separation for internal toothed working gears and with a cutting direction opposed to the direction of displacement.
