PURPOSE: A variable type water pump is provided, in which variable type vane is arranged to be controllable by the expansion/contraction of wax, to thereby adjust discharge quantity of pump in accordance with the temperature of coolant. CONSTITUTION: A water pump includes an impeller having a plurality of vanes(20) disposed in a radial direction at the upper surface of a main body(10) of the impeller. The vanes are arranged onto the main body of the impeller, in such a manner that the vanes are inserted or projected through a vane mount hole(10a). The main body of the impeller has a unit installed inside of the main body so as to adjust the degree of insertion or projection of the vane, thus adjusting the discharge quantity of the pump in accordance with the adjusted degree of insertion or projection of the vane. The unit includes a vane support(22) formed integrally with the lower end of the vane so as to move the vane upward and downward; a wax(26) filled beneath the vane support, and which expands according to the temperature rise of coolant so as to move the vane support upward; and return springs(24a,24b) having ends fixed at the inner upper portion of the body of the impeller and the other ends fixed at the upper surface of the vane support.
