PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous resin composition which can form films that exhibit improved water resistance and spot resistance upon insufficient exposure to the sunrays or before exposure to the sunrays, while maintaining the characteristics of the films after curing by the sunrays. SOLUTION: This curable aqueous resin composition comprises a copolymer (A) comprising, as constituent monomer units, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having a maleimide group, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having an aldehyde group or ketonic structure and, if necessary, another ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the foregoing monomers, a compound (B) having at least two hydrazine or semicarbazide groups in the molecule, and an aqueous medium, the component (A) being dispersed in the aqueous medium.
