Novel beta -lactam compounds represented by the following general formula [1]: [1] wherein R<1> represents lower alkyl, etc.; R<2> represents H or lower alkyl; X represents O, S or NH; m and n are each from 0 to 5, provided that n+m is from 1 to 5; Y<1> represents halogeno, etc.; and Y<2> represents H, optionally substituted lower alkyl, etc.; salts thereof or nontoxic esters of the same. These compounds exhibit an excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, in particular, methicillin-resistant <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i>. |
