PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a melamine curable aqueous coating material composition which excels in the hardness, mar resistance, water resistance, retorting resistance, processability, and the like, of coating films and is suited in use for coating materials for automobiles, appliances, beverage cans, and the like. SOLUTION: This melamine curable aqueous coating material composition comprises 5-30 pts.wt. acrylpolyol resin whose polymerization component contains at least a low lactone-modified hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylic ester composition containing less than 50% monomer having a chain of >=2 lactones (n>=2) represented by the formula (wherein R, R1, R2, and R3 are each independently hydrogen or methyl group; (j) is an integer of 2-6; xn of R4 and R5 are independently hydrogens or 1-12C alkyl groups; (x) is 4-7; and (n) is 0 or an integer of not smaller than 1 and the mean value of (n) in the composition is not less than 0.3 to less than 1.0) and 10-60 pts.wt. aminoplast resin.
