PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To freely change the compact state of a filter medium and to perform efficient filtering operation corresponding to the turbidity of raw water or a filtering speed. SOLUTION: An appropriate number of filter media 8, etc., which are constituted of core strings 8a and suspended matter catching yarns 8b, etc., radially projecting from the peripheries of the core strings, are housed in filter chamber 1. One end of the each filter medium 8 is fastened to the perforated plate 2 constituting the filter chamber 1 and the other one end thereof is fastened to the movable material 3 allowed to approach and separated with respect to the perforated plate 2.
