PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly and accurately discriminate various kinds of recorded mediums such as ordinary paper, coated paper, glossy paper, glossy film, and an OHP sheet. SOLUTION: The recorded medium is discriminated on the basis of the detected output of a light receiving element 14 detecting fluorescent components of light beam irradiated from a luminous element 12 and reflected on a recording surface 10a of the recorded medium 10.
