PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cartridge detector which can detect the type of a print tape contained in a tape cartridge appropriately, and a tape printer comprising it. SOLUTION: The cartridge detector 37 for detecting the type of a print tape T contained in a tape cartridge 20 through the tape cartridge 20 fixed to cartridge fixing section 30 comprises a detection switch 60 provided at the cartridge fixing section 30 and turned on/off by engaging a protruding and recessed part formed at a part 29 being detected of the tape cartridge 20 selectively from the fixing direction. The detection switch 60 is movable in the fixing direction of the tape cartridge 20 between a steady position and a push-in position in the rear thereof and urged toward the steady position by means of a spring 71.
