PURPOSE: A rigid surface coating material with high toughness for cutting and abrasion resistance tools is provided to suppress deterioration of toughness of coated tools by reducing thermal stress of a thin film coated on the tools using chemical vapor deposition. CONSTITUTION: The surface coating material for a cutting or abrasion resistance tool is characterized in that one or more materials selected from the group consisting of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of group IV-A metal comprising oxygen are laid up on a matrix of the cutting or abrasion tool as a rigid coating layer by chemical vapor deposition. The surface coating material for a cutting or abrasion resistance tool is characterized in that one or more materials selected from the group consisting of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of group IV-A metal comprising oxygen are laid up on a matrix of the cutting or abrasion tool by chemical vapor deposition, and one or more materials selected from the group consisting of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of group IV-A metal comprising oxygen, Al2O3, ZrO2, Y2O3, AlN, cBN and TiB2 are laid up on the above layer. The surface coating material for a cutting or abrasion resistance tool is characterized in that one or more materials selected from the group consisting of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of group IV-A metal comprising oxygen, Al2O3, ZrO2, Y2O3, AlN, cBN and TiB2 are laid up on a matrix of the cutting or abrasion tool, and one or more materials selected from the group consisting of nitrides, carbides and carbonitrides of group IV-A metal comprising oxygen are laid up on the above layer by chemical vapor deposition.
