A continually operated assembly (12) applies a liquid or paste coating to the surface of a paper web. Incoming paper (22) feeds over and down a roller (24) to a point (P) at which the pre-mixed coating (18) descends from a reservoir (16). The angle alpha (Z) at which the fluid and web meet is pref. 20 with respect to the tangent (TE) The angle of the fluid reservoir (14) can be adjusted with respect to the paper surface (U) by an actuator (40). The descending fluid curtain (120) impinges feely upon the web surface (122), defining the tangent (TE). The web is supported by the roller (24) at the point (P) of application. The roller diameter is between 300 and 2000 mm. The width over which the fluid medium is applied is less than the width of the web. The length of the fluid feed curtain is between 40 and 200 mm.
