The invention relates to an optical system comprising a transmitter. The aim of the invention is to ensure easy, low-cost reliable operation of said optical system, enabling the optical radiation emitted by the transmitter to be emitted as an optical transmission signal via an exit surface in a specific direction of transmission. A measuring element is thus arranged in the transmitter at a specific angle in relation to the transmitter, said measuring angle detecting a scatter signal as the optical radiation of the transmission signal scattered on the exit surface. The translucence of the exit surface is determined as a measure of the impurity thereof by evaluating the scatter signal. The inventive optical system can by used in automotive driver assistance systems.
