The device has an essentially circular component with an irregular surface coupled to the camshaft, whereby the irregular surface enables position and revolution rate information for the camshaft to be provided for several different configurations of internal combustion engine from the group of four, five, six and eight cylinder engines. Independent claims are also included for the following: a camshaft system for an internal combustion engine and an internal combustion engine.
